Gefion: Denmark’s Sovereign AI Test

Project stage Operating

Published October 31, 2026 · Copenhagen, Denmark

Denmark’s Gefion is already running. Its next test is turning publicly backed AI capacity into sustained commercial demand.

Investment takeaway

Gefion gives Denmark an operating AI compute platform without building a new hyperscale campus from scratch. NVIDIA supplies the original hardware platform and Digital Realty hosts it. The next financial question is how often that equipment is used, what customers pay, and how the operator funds replacement hardware. The reviewed record does not answer those questions.

What has been delivered

NVIDIA and independent trade publication DCD document the October 23, 2024 inauguration in Copenhagen. The original configuration contains 1,528 H100 GPUs across 191 DGX systems. TOP500 subsequently records a completed HPL benchmark. These are stronger delivery signals than an announcement alone; they do not establish the current expanded hardware inventory.

Ownership and funding

DCAI owns and operates the system. The Novo Nordisk Foundation identifies its stake as 85%, with state investment fund EIFO holding 15%. EIFO records approximately DKK 600 million committed by the foundation and DKK 100 million contributed by EIFO to establish the initiative. The combined DKK 700 million is founding funding, not an audited hardware invoice or evidence of capital fully spent. The foundation is distinct from listed pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk; its ownership must not be attributed directly to that stock.

Expansion needs its own delivery evidence

In an October 19, 2026 announcement, DCAI says it is investing in 32 NVIDIA DGX Rubin NVL8 systems following a B300 expansion. That is an attributed operator statement, not verified commissioning. No expansion delivery date, price, accepted installed inventory or incremental operating power is established here. The 1,528-H100 baseline should therefore not be presented as the complete current fleet.

A benchmark is not a power contract

TOP500 lists 66.59 PFLOP/s of HPL performance and 1,753.20 kW of system power for its benchmark record. That is about 1.75 MW in a specific test context. It is not the host campus grid connection, continuous electricity consumption or a verified current operating IT-load total. We exclude it from operating-MW aggregates. Renewable-energy descriptions in participant material likewise do not prove hourly matching or measured emissions.

Access is documented; commercial performance is not

Danish Defence stated on August 27, 2026 that its AI centre has access to Gefion. That confirms an identified public-sector access relationship, not billed usage or contract revenue. The Lyngby address in the same announcement is the AI centre event venue and is not evidence of the computer’s physical location. Utilization, tariffs and project operating revenue remain unavailable in the reviewed record.

Companies and financial context

The documented public-company connections are NVIDIA’s original compute/networking platform and Digital Realty’s hosting role. Eviden installed the original system and was described as an Atos Group company in the 2024 record; we have not verified the current ownership or assigned present-day earnings exposure. NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 results and Digital Realty’s Q3 2026 results provide group financial context, not Gefion revenue, margin or rent. A supplier relationship is not a valuation conclusion.

What to watch next

The useful next records are expansion delivery and acceptance, a reconciled installed hardware inventory, billed GPU hours, utilization, pricing and renewal costs. Exact host-facility identification and measured energy/water data would strengthen the physical-infrastructure record. Until those arrive, the original installation is operating while expansion economics remain open.
