Power generation supporting computing demand

NextEra Energy combines regulated utility operations with an energy-development business. Its collaboration with Google includes a planned restart of the Duane Arnold nuclear plant, creating a direct long-term power-sales relationship. That project is one part of a much wider generation and utility portfolio.

Second-quarter 2026 financial scale

NextEra reported adjusted earnings of $2.407 billion and adjusted earnings per share of $1.15 for the second quarter of 2026. Florida Power & Light’s rate base reached $79.7 billion, up from $72.9 billion a year earlier. Those utility figures do not quantify AI-related revenue.

A restart rather than current output

The 615 MW Duane Arnold plant has been closed since 2020. Google’s 25-year power agreement supports a planned return to operation, subject to regulatory approvals. The announcement therefore establishes contracted future demand, rather than electricity currently being produced by the plant for Google.

Long-term supply and ownership plans

NextEra and Google described nearly 3 GW of energy projects executed together. For Duane Arnold, an agreement to acquire the remaining minority ownership would give NextEra full ownership when completed. The broader collaboration total should remain separate from the capacity and economics of this specific restart.

Regulatory approval and restart costs

Nuclear regulatory approvals and the work needed to return the facility to service determine whether the targeted restart can be achieved. The disclosed materials do not separately quantify Google’s contract pricing or the project’s profit contribution. Company-wide earnings cannot substitute for those project-level economics.

The target is early 2029

The stated restart target is the first quarter of 2029. Intermediate regulatory approvals, progress on plant work and confirmation of the ownership transaction would provide more immediate evidence of execution. Commercial operation would then distinguish a contracted plan from actual power delivery under the long-term agreement.

Documented project connections

Each connection below has a specific, cited role. A supplier, lender, customer or proposed acquirer has different economics from the project owner.

Google Council Bluffs

Regional energy relationship: Google and NextEra agreed to support the Duane Arnold restart and Google's growing Iowa infrastructure.

The source establishes regional Iowa support, not dedicated capacity for Council Bluffs. Early-2029 restart and more than 600 MW are future regional-grid expectations.

Google Mesa

NextEra Energy Resources operates renewable facilities supporting Google's Mesa energy program through the SRP grid.

The energy supply arrangement is not NextEra campus ownership, and the 2026 carbon-free-energy target is not proof it has been achieved.

Evidence boundaries

Company totals, segment sales, bookings, backlog, spending, capacity and usage describe different things. They do not establish project-level revenue, earnings or an exact AI-only revenue share unless the cited disclosure explicitly says so.

This is a dated research snapshot. Forecasts are attributed expectations, and undisclosed amounts remain unknown. Source review does not certify every project or future outcome.
