Duke Energy

Business, financial evidence and documented connections to the AI buildout.

NYSE:DUK · Research reviewed October 18, 2026

Business and AI exposure

Duke Energy operates regulated electric utilities, including Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress. Its exposure to AI infrastructure comes through serving large data-center loads and building the associated grid infrastructure. Regulated contracts and tariffs determine how those investments are recovered.

Financial context

For Q2 2026, Duke reported GAAP earnings of $1.38 per share and adjusted earnings of $1.43 per share. Regulatory settlements contributed to the difference. The company did not disclose an AI-only revenue figure or the investment share affected by its large-load settlement.

Products and delivery

An October 7, 2026 settlement with utility stakeholders and hyperscalers sets out protections for existing customers. It applies to qualifying new loads of at least 50 MW with an 80% load factor and relevant agreements signed after June 1.

Plans and commitments

The settlement proposes upfront customer funding, deposits and contractual protections for major new loads. Approval by the North Carolina Utilities Commission remains pending, with a decision expected by mid-November 2026. A signed settlement is therefore distinct from an effective regulatory approval.

Economics and dependencies

Large-load service depends on permits, financing, grid construction and cost-recovery decisions. Separately, North Carolina permits for Amazon’s Richmond temporary generation require testing and monitoring, with engines retiring within one year of starting. Those permits are not Duke’s tariff approval.

What to watch

The commission’s decision will clarify which customer-funding protections take effect. Subsequent utility updates can show infrastructure spending and load connections, while temporary generation and permanent grid service should remain distinct. Contract terms alone do not establish electricity already delivered to data centers.

Documented project connections

Each connection below has a specific, cited role. A supplier, lender, customer or proposed acquirer has different economics from the project owner.

AWS Richmond County

Duke Energy Progress temporary bridge-power permittee, not quantified campus earnings

The documented role does not establish contract value, project-level earnings, accepted operating load or a share of company revenue.

Google Lenoir

Google identifies a carbon-free energy agreement with Duke Energy in its North Carolina data-center history.

The historical energy relationship does not establish a new current campus expansion, AI-only load or utility earnings.

Evidence boundaries

Company totals, segment sales, bookings, backlog, spending, capacity and usage describe different things. They do not establish project-level revenue, earnings or an exact AI-only revenue share unless the cited disclosure explicitly says so.

This is a dated research snapshot. Forecasts are attributed expectations, and undisclosed amounts remain unknown. Source review does not certify every project or future outcome.
