Owning power infrastructure for computing demand
American Electric Power operates electricity businesses and is developing the Cheyenne Fuel Cell project to serve Google. AEP is expected to control approximately 92% of the project, with Basalt funding about 8%. Bloom supplies the fuel-cell equipment; AEP’s role is infrastructure ownership and power supply.

Second-quarter 2026 earnings and investment
AEP reported $5.445 billion of revenue, $713 million of GAAP earnings and $742 million of operating earnings for the second quarter of 2026. Its five-year capital plan totaled $78 billion, with some additional identified opportunities outside that plan. These are company-wide figures, not Cheyenne project returns.
Construction is planned for 2026
The October 14, 2026 announcement described approximately $4 billion of investment in the Cheyenne project and construction expected during the remainder of 2026. This is a development commitment. It does not establish that the fuel cells have been installed or are already delivering electricity.
A 20-year Google power agreement
The project includes 702 MW of Bloom fuel cells and a 20-year power purchase agreement with Google. Full operations are targeted by the end of 2028. The long contract provides a defined customer relationship, while actual revenue depends on bringing the power assets into service.
Project returns and wider load growth
AEP reported signed new-load agreements reaching 69 GW, including industrial customers beyond AI. That total should not be labeled entirely as data-center demand. Its approximately $5 billion of Department of Energy loans can reduce interest costs, but described customer savings are not equivalent to shareholder profit.
Watch construction, commissioning and economics
Construction start, equipment installation and staged commissioning will show progress toward the end-2028 operating target. The Cheyenne project’s individual returns have not been disclosed. Ownership funding, capital costs and the economics of the Google contract will determine how the announced capacity contributes to AEP earnings.
Documented project connections
Each connection below has a specific, cited role. A supplier, lender, customer or proposed acquirer has different economics from the project owner.
AWS / STACK Northwest Louisiana
Utility parent exposure through SWEPCO, which names AWS as a customer in northwest Louisiana.
Customer-funded improvements and a utility partnership do not establish accepted computing load or project-level AEP earnings.
Google Fort Wayne / Project Zodiac
Utility parent through Indiana Michigan Power, which the state identifies as working with Google on clean-energy resources for the Fort Wayne investment.
This establishes the named utility collaboration, not a disclosed project contract value, dedicated capacity, accepted load or company earnings.
Evidence boundaries
Company totals, segment sales, bookings, backlog, spending, capacity and usage describe different things. They do not establish project-level revenue, earnings or an exact AI-only revenue share unless the cited disclosure explicitly says so.
This is a dated research snapshot. Forecasts are attributed expectations, and undisclosed amounts remain unknown. Source review does not certify every project or future outcome.
